What is Plantar fasciitis?

It is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting the heel bone (calcaneus) to the toes. This fascia supports the arch of the foot and absorbs the shock while you walk and run. If this fascia, or tissue is damaged or irritated it will cause inflammation which can be very painful in the heel and arch.

What causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition among runners, or people who spend a lot of time on their feet or walking. It can also be caused if you have flat feet or high arches as this puts strain on the plantar fascia. Tightness in calf muscles can also affect the plantar fascia as does a sudden increase in physical activity, for example if you start to train for a marathon and go too hard too soon. Being overweight, or gaining weight for example, during pregnancy can also be a common factor in the onset of plantar fasciitis.

The pain is usually more severe after periods of rest, for example when you get up in the morning, or after long periods of sitting down. However it can also be painful at any time of the day depending on how badly damaged the fascia is.

You can find more information on plantar fasciitis here.

Treatments

It is advised to rest, ice the area, and stretch. Depending on the severity some people may need to seek medical advice and go down the route of steroid injections but this is something to avoid if possible. The right footwear is imperative to prevent or manage plantar fasciitis.

Your footwear needs to be:

  • Breathable
  • A good fit for the width of your foot
  • Low-heeled
  • Arch Support
  • Shock-absorbing
  • Cushioned

Pair of Revs reflexology sandals

Revs® provides all of the above elements, plus you have the added benefit of the reflexology massage sole.

As you walk or stand, the nodules on the massage map to all your reflex points on the soles of your feet, which correspond to all of the glands, organs, muscles and parts of the body. When various reflexes are stimulated they induce a healing response. Wearing Revs® is similar to receiving a reflexology treatment, where the reflexology therapist would use her thumbs and fingers to massage and stimulate your reflexes. Revs® uses natural rubber nodules in various and heights and widths to ensure it maps to the contours of your feet and you receive an effective level of stimulation and comfort in the right places.
